Flexcut KN400 Detail Knife Set Review

Finding the perfect knife set for your carving project is very necessary for coming up with a wood carving that you are happy with. If you thought the KN300 was a great set of knives, then you will surely be tickled pink with this set. The Flexcut KN400 has three blades as well as a sharpening compound.

This will come in handy when you are on the go, and you need to sharpen the blades. The three blades in this set are the Flexcut KN19, Flexcut KN20, and Flexcut KN27. All three of these blades have a very sharp edge and a specific use at that. Knowing what these uses are will help you get a more precise and effective carving.

The tools in this kit, are high quality and also high precision. The blades are made of high-grade carbon steel. They all come honed and ready to be used right out of the packet. The KN19 is a mini pelican knife. Whilst the KN20 is the mini-chip knife and the KN27 is the mini detail knife.

The set has three knives and they have some things in common in terms of looks, and some differences. Otherwise, you would be getting the exact same knife, and that is not the ideal scenario. They all have a slim brown wooden look on the handle, with the flex cut red logo across it.

The handle is perfectly finished and smooth. It feels great in the hand and the ergonomic design helps you have better control as you carve and also reduce hand fatigue. They are just the right size to fit nicely in your hand.

The pelican knife has a curved blade. It is extremely thin for better performance. The blade has a narrowed point, and the handle has many places where you can hold it.

This helps you maintain control. The blade bevel is 7/8″. The KN19 weighs 1.6 ounces and is 9 inches high. It is also 1.25 inches long and 3.5 inches wide.

The second knife in this set is the KN20 knife, which is a mini chip carving blade. The blade is small and protrudes downwards from the handle at an angle, to enable better control.

You may be tempted to think that there is not much that it can do, but on the contrary, it is a very handy and necessary tool in the wood carver’s collection.

The blade has a 5/8″ bevel and is extremely thin just like on the KN19. It is 1.25 inches long and 3.5inches wide, weighing 1.5 ounces.

The third knife is a KN27 knife. This is known as a detail knife and this is because of the details it allows you to work on. All the blades on these knives, are small and machined to perfection.

The small handles are smooth to touch and they easily fall in line when you handle them. Unlike some knives that are bulky and not appealing to look at. If looks alone mattered, this set of knives would be top of most people’s list anyway.

Performance Review

Each blade is precision machined for a purpose. Having this kit means that you can do a variety of cuts all from the same set. The KN19 mini pelican knife has a small blade that is thin and curved so that you can get cleaner slices, similar to those that you get with the skew.

Thanks to the pointed edge on the blade, you get a much tighter turning radius. This helps when you are carving out very delicate and fine designs and you need a tool that will deal only with the part being carved without damaging adjacent wood. This is why the handle also needs to be small and petite enough, otherwise, the work can get messy.

The KN20, also known as the mini chip carving knife. The way in which you hold it as you chip away at the wood matters a great deal. The beauty of carvings made with this knife is the angles and shadows that it makes.

The utter precision comes from how you skillfully handle the wood. Hold the knife between your thumb and index finger. You can use your other hand to make sure that you get a steady cut. Working in the same position is one of the ways to get great looking cuts, consistently.

It is important to be careful when you use all the blades. For example,

when using the KN20, you will need to hold the knife between your index finger and your thumb, and chip away at the wood almost in a plunging fashion. When doing this, it is important that you are totally focused and your fingers and thumbs are out of the way and protected.

It would be very easy to slice your thumb when using this method and that is why it is necessary to be more careful when using this blade. A thumb guard will do you good.

All the blades are very sharp and it is important to make sure that you are careful as you deal with them. They are ready to use right out of the packet.

Who is this product ideal for?

If you are just starting out, and you want to learn how to carve with knives, this is a great place to start. The slim handle design, also makes this tool, great for people with small petite hands, or for people who want to work on small delicate carvings. The blades are small enough to fit in a lot of places and produce the desired result.

  • You get three knives in the same set.
  • The set comes with a sharpening compound.
  • The blades are high quality.

  • They are small, and this can be a downside for someone who has big hands.

Our Verdict

This knife set will help you create accurately beautiful geometric designs. Each of the knives in this kit is sharpened to the 9’s. This works very well when carving particular designs. We think it is a great set to have, especially if you are a budding woodcarver. Happy shopping! Flexcut KN700 Deluxe Palm & Knife Set Review.
